Here is the After Dark 2.0x Updater v.1.0.2 that fixed the problem I was
having with it and Fileguard. It is very easy to use. Just double on the
updater icon, then go under the file menu and click "update". It will
update afterdark and all the mods.
I was having problems with Afterdark and Fileguard. Everytime I restarted my
Mac I had to reset all the Afterdark settings.
Here is the Afterdark updater that fixes the problem with Fileguard.

Back in May ('93) I responded to an Info-Mac plea for an explanation of some
of
the more common acronyms used in E-mail messages. Things such as BTW, TLA,
and
IMHO are crystal clear to some of us... and opaque to others. The list I sent
was intentionally small - only the most common abbreviations were included.
Much to my surprise, rather than being posted to the list, my response was
archived as "/info-mac/comm/info/usenet-acronyms.txt". This is a MINOR update
to that file. It is still (intentionally) brief.
Please replace "usenet-acronyms.txt" with this file as
"usenet-acronyms-11.txt":

Goodness!
BTW = "By The Way"
It _is_ a common abbreviation on Internet... and I've grown so accustomed to
seeing it that I (like many others) use it without considering how opaque it
must seem to some.
BTW, FWIW, I once saw an amusing (IMHO) summary of common Email abbreviations
somewhere on Internet. Apparently, it has been long forgotten or nobody

these FAQ's re: TLAs. Guess I could summarize now. If, after reading it,
you find that you are SITD, remember that TANSTAAFL.

I've tried to restrict this list to those acronyms I see regularly - the
ones that seem to have "stuck"... there are a great many others that seem
to come and go. I have intentionally ignored acronyms that are primarily
hardware jargon (e.g. RAM, CD-ROM, etc.) - there are far too many to list.

interest warrants it.

Subject: (Q) Mac IIsi sound problems...
I have a question about the sound output on a Mac IIsi. On occasion, I just
won't get any sound from the thing! I thought I had heard of this type of
problem before, but I can't remember specifics. FYI, I don't have any
earphones or other devices plugged in the sound out port, and the problem
is, as I said, occasional. During one work session, the system beep may
work fine, but during another session (or the same one), neither the system
beep, nor any programs that use it, nor any programs that use sound at all
are making any noise! BTW, the sound level is not at zero.
I haven't done much significant testing as to when this occurs. I think the
problem usually goes away once I open the control panel and check on the
system beep. That solution works only for that session, though, I think.
My instinct tells me it's a software problem rather than a fault in the
speaker or its wiring. But, your guess is as good as mine. Any ideas would
be much appreciated! Mail to me directly and I will summarize to the net if
necessary. Thanks--

Subject: Accounting for printing on Ashare network
I have asked this question of many gurus, but to no avail, so I'm
trying again.
I have two laserwriters connected to a 3.01 Print Server.
The Server log gives me a listing of print job and the *name of the machine*
which is doing the printing.
I use ChooserUser to put the logon name into the Machine name, but
people who want to print don't need to log on.
Is there any way known to humankind that the Print Server can be tweaked
to require logon before it will accept jobs?
I know of some other solutions to this problem - copytext cards and
LaserCharge (the server keeps a count of a users printing, but the user
needs to insert a disc (like a key disc) before printing is enabled.
Both of these things are too cumbersome for my needs.
Any Ideas?

Subject: Apple CD300 on SGI machines (Q)
Dear Netters,
I live in a wonderfull mixed environment with a lot of Macs and some
SGI workstations. Now I want to buy a CD-ROM drive that can be used on
both kind of machines and delivers a lot of functionality. I thought the
Apple CD300 with its double speed, phot-CD and whatsoever would be a
good deal. It also is able to use ISO9660 format, so the SGI's should be
able to read it.
But when I tried to connect it to an SGI, I can't read any directory.
The machine does see the drive, I can tell the drive to eject the disk
(which the drive also does...), but I can't see any data !!!!
Does anybody have any experience with this situation? Did anybody ever
try this out ? Are there any general considerations that lead to the
conclusion that this can not work ?
Of course I could just use any dump CDROM drive, but the Apple CD300 has
some quite nice features, but I am not going to buy it when I can't use
it on the SGI machines...
Since I already on ether, does anybody know if there is something like
the Info-Mac digest for Sicon Graphics systems? Any hint is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Matthias

Subject: Attn: Ethertalk gurus (Q)
In the School of Engineering here at UCD there's an increasing number of
very frustrated Mac users.
The reason.
===========
Hooking into the campus-wide Ethernet so that we can access the Novell file
servers and Pegasus Mail system results in our machines being slowed down to
a crawl.
The symptoms.
=============
The two-way arrow icon indicating Ethertalk activity appearing on the menu
bar for up to 30 seconds at a stretch (more typically 2--10 seconds). Those
of you who use Ethertalk will realise that the machine is locked up during
this network activity. At peak periods, this icon is displayed for at least
25% of the time (i.e. 15 seconds in every minute). This occurs on all
categories of Mac (from LCs with SCSI/Ethernet adaptors, to IIcxs with NuBus
Ethernet cards, to Centris 650s with built-in Ethernet connections).
The question.
=============
Is this normal Ethertalk behaviour? If not, does it indicate that our
campus-wide Ethernet is incorrectly set-up? If it is normal behaviour, what
the heck do Apple think they're selling as a networking product?
I look forward to some interesting responses. Particularly ones I can use to
club our computing services people around the head with ;-) .

Subject: Claris Resolve - AutoDoubler incompatibility? Obsolete?
Any advice please as to a workaround would be very gratefully accepted by
an increasingly desperate would-be Resolve user!
Please reply directly to me and I'll summarise if relevant...
I use (and really like) Resolve (was using version 1.0v2) - especially its
scriptability. HOWEVER, since adding AutoDoubler version 2.0i, I get a bomb
(bus error) whenever I try to save a file, or turn AutoSave on, or on
occasions open a file. Although I have a pile of INITS/extensions
shoehorned into my 8MB/40MB SE/30 (System 7.0.1 British), it's definitely
AutoDoubler that's the problem: disable it at startup and Resolve is rock
solid. However, as you can imagine, I bought AutoDoubler because with a
40MB HD I'm desperate for space and turning it off and having to manually
decompress everything with the DD Expand utility is a pain.
The UK distributors Frontline knew nothing of this incompatibility but did
(eventually) send an upgrade to version 1.1v1 which I'm told is current:
problem persists! Actually, it's a bit more interesting than that in that
for the first couple of times everything was fine, I *think* (not positive)
that it was after AD first did an automatic scan/compression session that
the problem returned.
Any thoughts? (No reply as yet from Claris.tech@applelink)
On a related subject: is there any basis to the rumour (I think I saw it in
Tidbits?) that Resolve development has been shelved? We are about to embark
on a major customised patient database project for which Resolve would have
made a good platform, but I don't want to be stuck on an obsolete platform
that won't keep up with hardware/system progress. I really *don't* want to
be forced to by Microsoft Excel...

Subject: ClarisWorks 2 (C)
I just had my copy of ClarisWorks upgraded to v.2. It looks really good,
with one glaring exception: it doesn't seem to understand about positioning
of equations from equation editors (Expressionist 3.01 in this case)---they
are positioned way too high above the baseline. I assume that Expressionist
includes baseline information in its output, so it must just be that
ClarisWorks is ignoring it. ClarisWorks isn't unique (didn't I read
something in the Digest some time ago about this problem in Nisus as well?),
as Micro$oft Word 5.0a positions Expressionist equations about 1 pt too high
(but you can adjust the height by subscripting the equation by 3 pt rather

Subject: CrippleDrives lurking...
Just my $0.02 on the ~CrippleDrive~ story:
> * The new floppy disk drives will only read diskettes with data
> that has been written according to the MFM recording standard,
> which is commonly used by IBM-PC compatible computers.
Are they joking? I thought that companies like Apple(R) aimed at
solving problems. This silly idea only creates new problems:
1) to the users: it is very handy to carry with you 800K disks, being
sure that _every_ Mac is able to read it. This will not be true in the
future, with CrippleDrives laughing at you.
2) to the developers and software companies: instead of shipping a
single version on 800K disks, you will need two versions however.
Last summer I went to the US with a couple of friends (one is
Alessandro Levi Montalcini, a well-known shareware author). We brought
with us a tad of 800K disks with our software on it. We gave away the
disks throughout the States. Imagine the same journey with the
CrippleDrives around. We would have had to bring with us both 800K and
HD disks and ask everybody: do you own a SuperDrive or a CrippleDrive?
As an example, most Mac users (users, not programmers) here in Italy
really do not know how much memory is installed into their Macs. The
typical Mac Classic user will tell you he has got 40Mb of memory.
Imagine asking people about the SuperDrive and the CrippleDrive.
> * The new drives do not employ the automatic ejection feature
> used by SuperDrive disk drives. Instead, disks will have to be
> ejected via a manual eject button.
This is incredible to say the least! A Mac without the automatic
ejection feature is not a Mac, just as a Microsloth program without a
plenty of bugs is not a Microsloth program. But somebody suggested
that the new Apple machines would not be Macs. OK. I rephrase: an
Apple computer without the automatic ejection feature is no more an
Apple computer. They talk us about the Guidelines. They print books on
"Human Interface Guidelines" while themselves start following the
WC-DOS guidelines. The removal of the auto-ejection feature is a
**bad** idea. This is one of the key features of the Macintosh
user-friendliness! They should feel ashamed of having printed that
junk-directions on their publications. I wish I were John Sculley: I
would fire the people who proposed these ideas straight away. They
would have no problems in finding a job at Microsloth.
In order to avoid the gradual undermining of the Mac key concepts, if
Apple ever ships a computer with the CrippleDrive, my attitude will be
the following:
as I am the author of Disk Charmer, a (hopefully) nice and
user-friendly disk initializing and verifying utility, I will **not**
update Disk Charmer to accommodate for the new CrippleDrives; I do not
bypass the Operating System, nor the Disk Driver, but if ever Disk
Charmer requires changes to work properly with the CrippleDrives, I
will not make these changes on purpose;
dozens of people bought Macs because I recommended Macs; I will not
recommend Macs any more, guys.
I hope that the Mac community reacts promptly before it is too late.
People in contact with key decision-makers at Apple might forward them
my opinion.
We do not want or need the CrippleDrive. A serious hardware company
would announce: here is the SuperDuperDrive, capable of using GCR on
high-density media and achieving 1600K of storage, while retaining all
the old features; upgrade options for every Mac model.
Besides, the Apple article contains a false statement:
> 1.44MB media, since data on 720K disks requires conversion by
> Apple File Exchange before it can be read by the Macintosh
> Operating System.
The correct statement is: 720K WC-DOS disks requires conversion etc.
If you have Disk Charmer 2.0.x, you can make a perfectly working 720K
Mac HFS disk. The ~ReadMe~ document bundled with Disk Charmer explains
how to make it.

Subject: Duo Power Difficulties
If anybody has any ideas on this, I'd love to hear them. I've got a Duo
210, 8/80, Express Modem, and two similar, but I suspect separate,
problems.
First, when the machine is running on battery power, it sometimes shuts
itself down in a manner best described as "suddenly and without warning."
Usually this occurs within a minute of a cold start, a restart, or a wake.
Every once in a while, it happens later.
The other problem occurs in or out of the dock, on battery or AC, and is
much more rare: The Express Modem dials, and the instant it connects, the
machine shuts down.
I've tried resetting the Power Manager innumerable times, draining and
recharging the battery (although I'm told the Duo batteries don't have a
memory problem), and removing *all* my inits (except the Express Modem
ones). And though removing my inits *has* stopped a plague of other, more
frequent crashes, these two remain.
I'm hoping somebody can suggest a solution that doesn't involve bringing it
in for service, because service in this town is backed up for a week. I'm
not positive, but I suspect I would turn to dust if I was without my
machine for a week.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: How RAM speed & CPU speed affect computer speed
Brozovic Douglas wrote in asking if he had to get "faster" RAM for an
accelerated machine. I was confused for a while about how RAM speed relates
to CPU speed, and how they both relate to how fast the resulting computer is.
I did some research, and here is the story (Please email questions and
corrections to me directly, and I will post an update if necessary):
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doug (is that right?),
I think I can give you a fairly clear answer about "faster" RAM simms: Simms
are rated in terms of how long it takes for them to produce (or set) the
contents of a memory location, from the time they were asked to do it by the
CPU. This is measured in nanoseconds (10^-9 seconds).
The amount of time that it takes a CPU to do one "thing" (not necessarily one
instruction) is measured in megahertz. This is too bad, because megahertz
can be directly converted into nanoseconds (1000/MHz = nanoseconds). It would
make more sense if we said "This is a 25 nanosecond processor, and these are
80 nanosecond SIMMs." Then we could see directly how many processor ticks it
takes to get info from RAM.
For example, if your processor ticks ever 25 nanoseconds, and your RAM takes
60 nanoseconds to produce a result, then it is going to take at least 3 ticks
to get an answer. Thus, 75 nanosecond RAM is just as good for you as 60 nano-
second RAM.
A 40 MHz processor ticks once every 25 nanoseconds, a 33MHz one
ticks every 30 nanoseconds. Thus, a 40MHz processor with 60 nanosecond RAM
would actually be slower than a 33MHz processor with the same RAM - the
33 can get its info in 2 ticks (60 nanoseconds), but the 40 has to spend 3
ticks (75 nanoseconds). BTW, I don't think there is such a thing as 60
nanosecond RAM (other than in caches). I think 70 is the best there is.
This is why a 33MHz Mac IIvx is not faster than a 25MHz LC III. It is because
We can't make RAM fast enough to keep up with the faster processor. The reason
a 20MHz Centris (68040) is faster than a 33MHz is that it has a RAM cache -
a little bit of RAM that IS 60 nanoseconds or better (it would be too
expensive
to make all RAM as fast a cache RAM).
Hope this helps...

Subject: How to create a PostScript file with limited line length
Does anybody out there in netland know how I can create a PostScript file
with line of limited length (preferable 80 or 132 characters, but in any way
less than 255).
Let me explain why I need this:
We want to write calculation results from a FORTRAN program in a picture.
The picture of a piece of equipment is created in MacDraw Pro and printed
to a PostScript file. On the spots where a calculation result (temperature)
must be inserted a text label (like @TEMP11) is put in the picture.
The created postscript file is processed by a FORTRAN program (on a VAX)
which replaces the text labels @TEMP11 by the calculated value (273.15).
After this, the PostScript file is sent to a PostScript printer.
The problem: FORTRAN uses record I/O, not character I/O. The PostScript
file with the labels in it looks like one big line (one record) and cannot
be processed by the FORTRAN program.
Is there any trick to modify the LaserWriter driver to set a limit to the
length of the lines in generated postscript file ?
Thanks in Advance

I have a beautiful, bouncing baby Color Classic. It's so cute, it

seem to be a couple problems I'm having, that are connected with it.
1) I like the feature (I'm not sure whether it's a C.C. feature or a
Sys7.1 feature, since I'm new to both) that allows you to shut down by
pressing
the power key. Unfortunately, I also like the PowerSwitcher extension, which
allows me to cycle the windows with the power key. In fact, I like the
extension
better than the shutdown feature. Is there any way to disable the shutdown
feature so I can get PowerSwitcher to work again?
2) This may not be a C.C. problem, but I first noticed it while trans
transferring files from my old Mac to the new one. The desktop files on my
floppies are growing. And I mean to monstrous size--one is over 250k, others
top 100k, and every time (it seems) I copy things, the desktop grows. There's
nothing physically wrong with the disks, and rebuilding the desktop doesn't
do anything. All are clear of viruses via Disinfectant 3.2. What's the deal?
Oh, one more annoyance, SoftwareFPU crashes on startup, but I suppose
I should mention that to the author of that program.

I don't know about Excel, but I thought Word was slow-ish because it's
pseudocode. This isn't a big secret.

I seem to remember Murph Sewall writing in Vaporware that Word 6.0 would
not be pseudocode like Word 5.x, and that this time the Windows and Mac
versions would have practically identical feature sets, as they would
have a large amount of code in common. This makes a lot more sense to
me than the stuff quoted above - I think Murph and his magazine/net
sources were probably a lot more reliable than what company reps think
they know. Besides, Microsoft care about profit above all else, and
they realise that the installed base of LCII-type machines is just too
large for them to ignore.
My conclusion: Stay away from Microsoft products if you think there's an
equivalent/better alternative - this is what frustrates me, that their
competition is so poor sometimes. And don't jump to any conclusions based
on hearsay; it would be better to wait for betas (and attendant gossip)

Interesting conclusion. I think I prefer an alternate conclusion, stay away

Subject: Please Explain DAL
Could someone please fill in the missing pieces about DAL.
I am currently writing a complex disease tracking database in Foxbase+/Mac.
I
would like to integrate remote SQL queries to an Oracle database running on a
Vax, and Sybase running on a Sun Sparc-10 or a NeXT. Preferably the "DAL"
middleware should open the connection, make the query, and return the answer
all in the background. The user need not know where the information came
from,
but just that it has been retrieved.
Are there products that interface on the Mac with Foxbase? Or are the product
software dependant at all? Do I need seperate software for the Sun and the
Vax?
I've development a remote query system for Hypercard stacks and Sybase with
TCP
and FTP xcmds, but this does not use the DAL extension. I'm trying to
incorperate system 7 feature and remote access standards into my software for
future compatibility and ease of development and maintenance.
I would appreciate information or the location of information about
mac/sun/next software, as well as a technical description of how the DAL
remote
connection works, and even C or pascal ( preferably C ) source would be nice.

Some of you may have seen the new ads from Radius about their "instant

new list price of $999) that had blurry areas that made me want to rub

Another choice it to look into the features of the mail reader on your
Unix/whatever box, assuming that's where it gets sent to. Look for a
command to "undigestify" or "unburst" mail. This will break a digest into
its constituent msgs. (The 'msg' reader uses the '@' command to undigest,
for example)

First the bad news: the current version of Network Time (1.1.1) does
not have user configurable time offset. No way no how.
Some good news: Network Time 2.0, which is now completing beta test,
does have a user configurable time offset.
Further bad news: The current interface for setting up a time zone
only includes hours and minutes, but not seconds.
Further good news: The settings for the time zones are ResEdit
configurable and are kept in seconds, so you could change them by hand
if you wanted to.
Now the question: Before Network Time 2.0 is released, is it necessary
to include user adjustable seconds in the offset fields? The Map
control panel does not provide such a field, and I think it would be a
very specialized case like this that would require it. Any opinions?

Alan H. Stein wonders about connecting a Zenith VGA monitor to a Mac using
a $5 adapter (Issue 125).
I have found that some of these adapters are not wired quite right. I
"fixed" one (a Computer Care) by shorting pins 4 and 11 (monitor sense and
GND). I did this by wrapping a short length of THIN copper wire (one
strand from a multi strand wire) around the two pins. It wasn't easy, but
with a little fiddling (Olde Timey is best, but Bluegrass will do) I got
the wire in there and it did the trick. There's still some looseness, and
ocassionally I have to wiggle the adapter to get a good image on the
display (instead of an image that is double width and "wraps around" the
picture tube.)
Hope this helps.
